A simple handover sheet for shared pet supplies

By Roan Cong

When more than one person looks after the same pet, the smallest missing detail can create unnecessary shopping: one person thinks the spare lead is missing while another has put it in a travel bag. A short handover sheet can make everyday supplies easier to find without turning pet care into an inventory project.

Start with locations, not a long shopping list

Write down where the items already in use belong. Useful entries might include the walking kit, the grooming box, spare washable bedding and the travel carrier. Use names that another person will understand. “Blue cupboard, lower shelf” is more useful than “the usual place.” Keep the sheet near the supplies or in a shared note that everyone can open.

Separate ready, cleaning and retired

A spare item is only useful if it is ready to use. Put items waiting to be washed in a different place from clean spares. Mark damaged items as retired and keep them out of the active supply area rather than leaving them where someone might grab them in a hurry. Follow each product's care instructions; different materials and closures may need different treatment.

Give each entry a next action

A useful entry answers three questions: what is it, where is it and what happens next? For example: “Travel mat — drying rack — return to travel bag when fully dry.” Another might be: “Spare bowl — kitchen shelf — no action needed.” These are examples of a format, not claims about a particular product. Avoid vague notes such as “sort supplies” that leave the next person guessing.

Record measurements separately from preferences

If an accessory needs replacing, keep the manufacturer's sizing information and any relevant measurements alongside the item name. A colour preference is not a substitute for a fit check. Size labels are not necessarily comparable across brands. Before ordering a replacement, review the actual dimensions and intended use instead of relying only on the label on an old item.

Make purchasing status visible

Use a short status such as “not needed,” “compare options,” “ordered” or “received.” Add the date when an order is placed so another household member does not accidentally buy the same thing. There is no need to copy payment details or a full delivery address into a shared supplies note. The purpose is coordination, not storing sensitive records.

Keep the handover small

At the end of a walk or a trip, update only the entries that changed. Return clean equipment to its stated location, note anything still drying and flag anything that needs replacement. Once a month, remove obsolete entries. A short accurate sheet is more useful than a comprehensive one that nobody maintains.

This is an organisation checklist, not veterinary or product-safety advice. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for each item and consult an appropriate professional if you are uncertain about an animal's individual needs.
