Older travel articles sometimes say that New Zealand has six casinos. That figure needs a date. For a current itinerary, the useful question is how many licensed physical casino venues are operating, rather than how many names have appeared in directories over the years.

Start with the kind of venue

A land-based casino is a physical premises with a casino venue licence. It should not be confused with a pub or club that has gaming machines, or with an online casino brand. Searching for “casino near me” can mix those categories together, so a long results list is not a reliable count of licensed casino premises.

The five active land-based casino destinations in New Zealand are Auckland, Hamilton, Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin. Auckland and Hamilton are on the North Island; the other three are on the South Island. For a city-by-city reference, the NZ Casino Atlas directory shows the current venue set and separates it from online brands.

Why the older number persists

SkyCity Queenstown Wharf is the name that often turns a five-venue itinerary into a six-venue list. It is a historical record, rather than an additional active stop. SkyCity's regulatory table says its licence was surrendered on 28 March 2024. A search result can remain online long after a venue closes. An older article may have been accurate when written and still be wrong for a trip planned now.

This also explains why a brand name is a weak shortcut. One operator may run venues in several cities, each with its own address and licence. Count the physical premises that are active today, not every brand, former location or online product appearing in search results.

Check the record, then the visit details

The New Zealand Gambling Commission publishes casino licensing decisions and renewal material. The Department of Internal Affairs' casino guidance explains the regulatory framework and says casino patrons must be at least 20. These sources help with legal status and age requirements. They do not replace a venue's current information for today's opening hours, entry point, restaurant service or table availability.

For an evening out, use a two-step check. First confirm that the casino is part of the current licensed set. Then open the operator's current page or contact the venue for practical details. If the visit is part of a longer journey, check the route back to accommodation. A casino's opening time does not tell you when the last bus or regional connection leaves.

When sources disagree, identify the exact point of disagreement. A visitor guide may use a trading name while a legal record uses a company name. A renewal document may discuss a future term while the current venue continues to operate. Compare the address, operator, event date and source date. A recent webpage design date is not proof that every underlying fact has been checked recently.

Keep a small note for each potential stop: venue, city, source, date checked and the practical question still to confirm. That is more useful than saving a screenshot of a ranking. It also makes it easy to remove a former venue from the plan without losing the rest of the itinerary.

The result is a shorter and more useful list: five current physical destinations, each checked as its own venue.
