P0171 and P0174 Lean Codes: An Evidence-First Test Plan
P0171 and P0174 indicate that the engine control module is adding more fuel than expected to keep the mixture near its target. When both banks are lean, the shared cause matters more than either code by itself. Replacing oxygen sensors before checking the data often wastes time because the sensors may simply be reporting a real lean condition.
1. Preserve the conditions
Record freeze-frame data before clearing codes. Note engine speed, calculated load, coolant temperature, vehicle speed, short-term fuel trim, long-term fuel trim, and whether the engine was in closed loop. A fault that appears only at idle points in a different direction from one that grows under load.
2. Compare trims at idle and 2,500 rpm
Warm the engine fully, switch off unnecessary electrical loads, and observe both banks. If positive fuel trim is strongest at idle and improves when speed is held near 2,500 rpm, inspect for unmetered air: intake boots, PCV plumbing, brake-booster hoses, manifold seals, and purge flow. If trim stays high or worsens with load, test fuel pressure and delivery volume and evaluate the mass-airflow reading.
3. Prove the electrical baseline
Low system voltage, weak grounds, and excessive connector resistance can distort several signals at once. Measure battery voltage during cranking and charging, then perform loaded voltage-drop tests on the engine ground and the relevant sensor grounds. Inspect scan data for rationality instead of judging one parameter alone.
4. Test the suspected system
Use a smoke test for intake leaks, verify purge-valve sealing when commanded closed, check fuel pressure against service information, and inspect the MAF element and ducting. When possible, graph both banks together. A shared change supports a shared upstream cause; a single-bank change narrows the search.
5. Verify the repair
Clear adaptations only after the cause is corrected. Repeat the same idle and 2,500-rpm observations, then complete a road test under conditions close to the original freeze frame. Confirm that trims remain stable and that the monitor completes without the code returning.
